Ok here's a few words about wiki's.
As many know there is the main
wikipedia web site. This has millions of articles on just as many topics. This wiki is run as a community, where for every topic there is an open community of people able to edit the information, with the hope of making the information correct and well referenced.
A wiki is typically based on:
collaboration
community
crowds (crowdsourcing)
discussion
network effects
change
A wiki based community is recognised by the fact that no single person (or company) aims to own the information or the wiki, it is based on an open collaborative approach and allows the community to edit, amend and discuss via the wikipage
There are many other wiki software products available for individuals and companies to use and not just the main wikipedia. These other wiki products can be used for invite only collaboration too such as schools using a wikipage for working on a project with the classroom.
Many other projects are managed via a wikipage, for example a global network of artists may use a wikipage to develop a project, initially collaborating on writing a funding proposal and then managing the project. A wiki based project may have many pages all linked together, adding depth to the original front page.
You will typically see in a wikipage easy to use editing tools and communication tools such as forums, discussion boxes etc.
The wiki will typically have the ability to update the community of any changes made to the pages, keeping everyone informed.
